We want pupils to play an active and positive role in all aspects of school life. Westholme is committed to developing pupils’ skills as leaders across the school in order to develop their personal and social development.
We believe that all children should be given the opportunity to hold a position of responsibility that impacts the school as a whole, so we offer a wide range of leadership roles. For Year 5 and 6 children, this is part of their personal development and preparation for secondary school.
The following areas provide opportunities for leadership or responsibility:
- School Council (two representatives from each year group on a half academic year basis)
- House Captains (Year 6 post)
- Form and Vice Captains (each form elects these on a termly basis)
- Prefects (Year 6)
- Library Monitors
- Sports Captains of individual teams
At Westholme School, the views of the children matter.? We encourage children to share their views and ideas in a variety of ways. We believe that they best understand the ways in which they learn and should be at the centre of school improvement and community development.? Listening to the voices of pupils raises children’s self-esteem, develops their leadership skills and helps them value learning (both in school and beyond).
The main aim of the School Council is to help to make our school a better place for the children and to give us an opportunity to have our opinions and ideas heard. Each year group (from Reception upwards) has two special representative who are elected onto the Council. Their tenure is a term and a half, thereby allowing two groups of children to run the School Council in any given academic year. The class representatives inform the children in their classes what has been discussed at each meeting and the children can ask the representatives to take forward their ideas to the next meeting. Everybody gets a fair say in the meeting and nobody is left out.
